Sycamore Creek Saddles
TA0020 & GAS014
Trail Saddles
Manufacturer: Sycamore Creek Saddles
Model: TA0020 & GAS014
Category: Trail Saddles
Purchase: These are Paso Fino saddles, but I bought the
first one (TA0020) for my Thoroughbred for a base price of $350.00
with an upgrade to real fleece on the panels for a total of
$465.00. The second was $465.00. I purchased them online, the
first after I saw it on eBay from Sycamore Creek and the second
direct from Sycamore creek.
Likes: My Thoroughbred is the most difficult-to-fit horse
I (and many saddle dealers/manufacturers) have ever encountered.
We had been through so many saddles, treed and treeless, I lost
count. I needed a saddle to fit less than 17" inches of
functional back, raised to clear extremely high withers and
able to allow plenty of shoulder-room. The Tereque-style Paso
Fino saddle was my last hope. Tony at Sycamore Creek took the
measurements and photos and his Colombian saddle-maker put together
an inexpensive, comfortable saddle that fits my TB like a dream.
The next problem horse was my nearly as short-backed, hip-high
Paso Fino. Tony and his saddle-maker fit that one, too and at
a very reasonable price. Both saddles are comfortable for my
horses and for me. The GAS014 is an especially comfortable saddle
for me. They've very light, attractive although not show-fancy
and there's lots of flexibility in girth-placement and type
of girth because they're centerfire rigged. My PF especially
needed a girth placed well back away from his front legs for
proper movement. They seem to be a basically solidly-made saddle.
I'd recommend to anyone, especially for short-backed horses.
Dislikes: There's always some trade-off on inexpensive
saddles and it's often the fittings. The cinch, cinch straps
and stirrups on the TA0020 went into the trash and were replaced
with sturdier fittings. The cinch on the GAS014 is fine and
my horse likes it, but I replaced the thin straps with more
solid ones. Although the fenders on this model are good, I replaced
the stirrups with good endurance-style stirrups.
Quality: Well-made, the saddles themselves are sturdy
and the stitching and grommets seem very good.
Summary: Great saddles, especially for the price.
